Classic vs. new Outlook
The “classic Outlook” is currently the standard Outlook for managing mail and calendar. It is a desktop application that has grown over many years and also has interfaces with conzept 16. Microsoft is planning to replace Outlook with a new Outlook, the so-called “New Outlook”. However, this is by no means a further development, but an independent product based on Microsoft Edge (web-based).
For more information on the new Outlook see Microsoft Support.
Microsoft Roadmap
An initial version of the new Outlook is now available in Windows via the option “Try out the new Outlook”. Further features are planned in the new Outlook, but have not yet been implemented. This leads to restrictions. In the changeover process in April 2026, the new Outlook will then be activated by default; the classic Outlook must be explicitly selected so that it can continue to be used.
In the next step, it will no longer be possible to return to classic Outlook – if the new one is already in use. However, Microsoft will continue to support classic Outlook until 2029.
However, it is foreseeable that Microsoft is planning to replace Outlook in the medium term in favor of New Outlook.
Restrictions when using New Outlook with conzept 16
concept 16 offers interfaces via COM and drag & drop, which are provided by Outlook. As a web-based application, the new Outlook does not currently support the COM interface in particular. This means that drag & drop is not possible with the new Outlook. Further development on the part of Microsoft is currently not foreseeable.
Recommendation
Our recommendation is not to switch to New Outlook if your application requires or has a connection to Outlook.
Outlook
vectorsoft will follow the further development of New Outlook and report on future extensions of concept 16 for New Outlook in further blog articles.
